What Wallaby-VK does
Wallaby-VK legt eine Tastatur auf den Bildschirm — für alle, denen Tippen schwerfällt, für Rechner ohne angeschlossene Tastatur und für Zeichen, die auf der eigenen Belegung fehlen. Sie schwebt zum Start am unteren Bildschirmrand, nimmt keinen Fokus weg und schreibt in das Fenster, in dem gerade gearbeitet wird.
Dazu kommt, was eine reine Tastatur nicht kann: 40 Textbausteine auf Knopfdruck, ein Zwischenablage- Speicher für 10 Einträge, Diktieren per Mikrofon — komplett offline — und eine Tasten-Anzeige für Screencasts.
Wallaby-VK puts a keyboard on your screen — for anyone who finds typing hard, for machines with no keyboard attached, and for characters your own layout doesn't have. At startup it floats at the bottom of the screen, never steals focus, and types into whatever window you are working in.
On top of that come things a plain keyboard can't do: 40 text snippets at one click, a clipboard memory holding 10 entries, dictation through your microphone — fully offline — and a key display for screencasts.

- Startposition festlegen. Die Tastatur erscheint dort, wo du sie zuletzt abgelegt hast. Fenster öffnen, Tastatur an die gewünschte Stelle schieben, „Übernehmen“ drücken. Fehlt der Bildschirm später oder passt die Tastatur nicht mehr darauf, startet sie mittig auf dem Hauptbildschirm.
- Auto-Mute. Ein Rechtsklick auf „Leiser“ fährt die Lautstärke gleichmäßig auf null — die Dauer ist einstellbar. Ein Rechtsklick auf „Lauter“ holt den Ausgangswert genauso gleitend zurück; solange er gemerkt ist, steht er als schmale Marke im Lautstärkebalken.
- Kleinere Korrekturen. Die Auswahlfelder schließen sich jetzt durch einen zweiten Klick, Kurzhinweise flackern nicht mehr, und Monitore links vom Hauptbildschirm werden erkannt.
- Set the start position. The keyboard appears where you last put it. Open the settings window, drag the keyboard where you want it, press "Set". If that screen is gone later, or the keyboard no longer fits on it, it starts centered on the main screen.
- Auto-mute. A right-click on "Volume down" fades the volume to zero — the time is adjustable. A right-click on "Volume up" fades it back to where it was; while that value is stored, it shows as a thin mark in the volume bar.
- Smaller fixes. The select boxes now close on a second click, tooltips no longer flicker, and monitors placed to the left of the main screen are detected.

Für Screencasts, Tutorials und Vorträge: gedrückte Tasten, Kombinationen wie Ctrl+C, Maustasten und Scrollrad erscheinen als Einblendung auf dem Bildschirm. Position, Farben und Schriftgröße sind frei wählbar.
For screencasts, tutorials and talks: pressed keys, combos like Ctrl+C, mouse buttons and the scroll wheel appear as an overlay on screen. Position, colors and font size are all up to you.

Wallaby-VK kommt als einzelne AppImage-Datei. Es gibt kein Installationsprogramm und keine Paketquelle: die heruntergeladene Datei ist das Programm — und beim ersten Start richtet sie sich auf Wunsch selbst ein.
Wallaby-VK ships as a single AppImage file. There is no installer and no package repository: the file you download is the program — and on first start it sets itself up if you want it to.

- ZIP entpacken.
- Die AppImage ausführbar machen — Rechtsklick → Eigenschaften → „Ausführen als Programm erlauben".
- Doppelklick. Wallaby bietet an, einen Menüeintrag anzulegen, sich in den Autostart einzutragen und die Berechtigung für die Tastatureingabe einzurichten.
- Einmal ab- und wieder anmelden, wenn Wallaby dazu auffordert — danach erscheint die Tastatur am unteren Bildschirmrand.
- Unpack the ZIP file.
- Make the AppImage executable — right-click → Properties → "Allow executing file as program".
- Double-click it. Wallaby offers to add a menu entry, put itself into autostart, and set up the permission it needs to send keystrokes.
- Log out and back in once if Wallaby asks you to — after that the keyboard appears at the bottom of your screen.
Später hält sich Wallaby selbst aktuell: der
Aufruf mit --update ersetzt die installierte
Fassung durch die heruntergeladene. Zum Entfernen genügt
--uninstall.
Later on Wallaby keeps itself current: running
it with --update replaces the installed copy with
the downloaded one. To remove it, --uninstall is
enough.

Wallaby-VK ist für Linux mit Wayland gemacht und wird unter Kubuntu 26.04 mit KDE Plasma 6 entwickelt und getestet, auf AMD- und Intel-Rechnern. Erfolgreich geprüft wurde außerdem: Ubuntu 26.04, Linux Mint 22.3 (Cinnamon) und TUXEDO OS 2026.04.
Wallaby-VK is made for Linux with Wayland and is developed and tested on Kubuntu 26.04 with KDE Plasma 6, on both AMD and Intel machines. Also checked successfully: Ubuntu 26.04, Linux Mint 22.3 (Cinnamon) and TUXEDO OS 2026.04.

Wallaby-VK entsteht in meiner Freizeit, und ich weiß bisher kaum, wer es benutzt. Wenn dir die Tastatur hilft, wenn dir etwas fehlt oder wenn etwas nicht funktioniert: schreib mir eine kurze Mail. Zwei Sätze genügen. Besonders interessiert mich, ob sie im Alltag trägt, wenn Tippen aus gesundheitlichen Gründen schwerfällt — dafür ist sie gedacht, und dafür kann ich sie nur mit Rückmeldungen besser machen.
Wallaby-VK is built in my spare time, and so far I know very little about who uses it. If the keyboard helps you, if something is missing, or if something does not work: send me a short email. Two sentences are enough. I am especially interested in whether it holds up day to day when typing is hard for health reasons — that is what it was made for, and feedback is the only way I can make it better.
